06 of 35 CALL OF ABRAHAM – Story of Adam to Jesus

God’s reaction to human sacrifice was something like …

My babies!! They are killing my babies!

I hate this! Nobody is listening to me. Everybody is miserable.

Here is what I will do. I will create a whole new people. I will give them such experiences, they will have to figure out that I love them. I will teach them:

Faith

Hope, and

Love!

Faith – to believe in God

Hope – to trust in God

Love – to care about God and about each other

So God looked around and chose Abram and Sarai

Gen 11:29-30

#59

Later on God changed their names to Abraham and Sarah.

Gen 17:5,15

So we’ll just call them Abraham and Sarah.

Why this particular couple?

We know where they lived. They lived over in Haran, way East of Canaan, the Promised Land.

Gen 11:31

What else do we know about them?

[Abraham] was seventy-five years old when he left Haran. Gen 12:4

Sarah was sixty-five Gen 17:17

They had no children. Gen 11:30

In a time of polygamy, when men married “as many as they chose”, Abraham was loyal to Sarah even though they had no children. Noah had children with his one wife.

Abraham, at seventy-five years old, had no children, and was still faithful to his one wife. In his marriage, Abraham developed tremendous loyalty and ability to obey, which is very important in a husband.

Spouses learn to give the gift of cooperation.

So, when –

The LORD said to [Abraham]: “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you. Gen 12:1

… Abraham’s heart [was] entirely submissive to the Word and so he [obeyed] # 2570

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out … he went out, not knowing where he was to go. Hebrews 11:8

[Abraham] went as the LORD directed him Gen 12:4

… called by grace to a covenant with his Creator, … (Abraham gave God) a response of faith and love that no other creature [could] give in his stead. # 357 see also # 144

Just like no one else can give God your “response of faith and love”.

So Abraham, Sarah, and Abraham’s nephew Lot all migrated from Haran to Canaan. They had lots of adventures. You can read all about them in Genesis.
